What Is Envy and Jealousy?
Envy/jealousy means downplaying the relevance or importance of someone else in society.
They are pervasive emotions that can cripple our potential and relationships. These destructive feelings can stem from downplaying others’ importance or achievements.
But there’s hope.
Envy and jealousy are so common in today’s world and, therefore, play a significant role in most of the problems we face daily.
But the big question is, is there a way out of this? So many people try as much as they can not to feel envious but keep failing miserably.
The Root Cause of Envy
Envy and jealousy are part of our human nature ( a pattern) to men, which we are born with (Psalms 51:5). They are inherent human tendencies.
You may be surprised to find out that most believers out there also suffer from this same pandemic.
Envy is being triggered by the information we receive about someone else; then, an emotion is formed from within you.
It is very important to be aware of this plaque of envy in order to be able to seek help from God and find ways to overcome and be free from it.
Overcoming Envy and Jelousy
What, then, is the way out? Do we just pray ourselves out of envy? Is it that simple?
Prayer is very important, but together with prayer, we need something very important also.
The first step to overcoming envy/jealousy is to be aware of its presence in your heart and then understand that it is because you do not know who you truly are.
The most important aspect of overcoming this plaque of envy and jealousy is renewing the mind by the word of God (Romans 12:2).
Renewing the mind involves two major steps:
Seeking Christ through word studies and prayers reveals to us who we truly are in Christ Jesus and how important we are in this world (Matthew 5:14).
It also reveals to us God’s plans for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11).
Knowing all these truths helps in releasing you from the pressure of this world and thereby overcoming the spirit of envy and jealousy.
When we understand who we truly are — how important or valuable we are —then we’ll see no reason to be envious.
Guarding your heart with all diligence (Proverbs 4;23). Guarding your heart involves protecting the gateways of your heart by choosing what information you receive in your heart. When you do not know or see certain things about people, then you will have no reason to be jealous of them, this also helps in overcoming the spirit of envy and jealousy.
Transforming Envy into Growth
What if I tell you now that feeling envious of someone else is a gift? Yes, you heard me correctly, a gift.
One of the ways to maximise the spirit of envy and jealousy is to embrace it as a gift.
The Bible make us understand that all things work together for our good, to those who love God and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).
When we present before God our whole self, He uses everything for our good.
Envy and jealousy are emotions triggered in our inside by thoughts we dwell in, once that emotion is created, then it can be used for our good.
Nothing is more valuable than a heart which has caught fire – having a burning desire about achieving something specific. It enables you to press for more while expressing gratitude about life.
Rather than shying away from envy, you can still use that envious emotion — energy in motion and channel it into the pursuit of your desires while focusing on your values. This means using it as a catalyst for personal growth and transformation.
The envious energy becomes a strong desire, and the desire is then used to press towards the pursuit of building your values and living a purpose-driven life.
Present your emotions to God, and He will use them for your benefit.
