Rethinking Giving: Unpacking Its True Significance

When the word “giving” is mentioned, many assume it’s about receiving back in double fold what they’ve given. However, this perspective resembles an investor awaiting profit (return on investment) rather than a genuine act of worship and fellowship with God.

Understanding why God requires giving and its significance puts us in a state of genuine relationship with God.

As Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”

The Significance of Giving

When we study the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the promised land, God taught them about giving multiple times through His servant Moses.

A profound scripture is (Deuteronomy 14:22-23), where God stresses the importance of tithing so that they may learn to revere the Lord their God always.

This great bible verse teaches us that our giving or tithing is not only thighed to our receiving, but rather, it has a much greater significance in the spirit.

The three major significance of our giving regarding this scripture are;

It is a sign of our great respect for God
It reflects our devotion to God.
It indicates our honour (worship) to God.

Is this why many give and have no encounter or breakthrough through their giving? YES.

Many people give to receive more from God, little do they understand that giving creates trust in their relationship with God, and receiving is just a byproduct of this trust built through their giving.

This is why we are also expected to give to widows, orphans and those in need, not just in churches.

Having the Right Perspective in Giving

Giving is for the advancement of God’s will upon the face of the earth.

It is important to note that the blessings of God are not only limited to material things but also long life, peace of mind, good health, and a lot more.

Taking Action

The major reason why most people do not experience the reward for their giving or tithing is their motives (heart posture) for their giving.

They consider giving as an investment rather than an act of great respect for God, their devotion to God, and their honour (act of worship to God).

Therefore, having the right motives towards giving is what brings us to having great encounters and spiritual maturity in Christ.

Shift your motive on giving from receiving to revering the Lord, serving God’s purpose in truth and sincerity.

Prayer;

Heaven Father, thank you for your unchanging love and your unfailing mercy upon my life, thank you for this wonderful truth revealed to me this day through your word.

Please, I ask that you shape my motives toward giving to your kingdom. Let my giving be a reflection of my respect, devotion, and honour to you, and not from a selfish heart, so that I may fully experience your rewards through my giving. In Jesus’ matchless name, I pray, AMEN!
